#2 – Stay away from trans fats.

Read your labels. Do not eat trans fats as they have been linked to increased abdominal fat and a variety of health problems.

Trans fats are made by forcing hydrogen into saturated fats. Who the hell thinks of these things!? Margarine is the biggest trans fat culprit. How many times did you make something as simple as toast for your children and use margarine? Switch to real butter people! The additional monetary cost to purchase butter FAR outweighs the health cost of eating margarine and other trans fats. Especially the health of your children.

Other food products containing trans fats include prepackaged foods, fried fast food, potato chips and many, many more!

For more information about other additives that are devastating to your health, read my article One Reason You’re Overweight – High Fructose Corn Syrup. Hint, hint – high fructose corn syrup – the artificially made kind is digested only in the liver ads to belly fat. High fructose corn syrup is often used as a sweetener and binding agent in processed foods because it is cheap. However, because it is so common in our foods, the liver becomes bombarded with fat and becomes detrimental to your health.

I implore you to read my article on high fructose corn syrup.

I can not stress enough to you had bad for you additives and trans fats are for your body. Treat your body with respect. Eat healthy, read your labels go organic or grow your own food for goodness sake!

#3 – Lose the Bad carbs, lose the belly fat.

What are bad carbs? Well in case you don’t already know it, bad carbs are foods made with refined sugars and grains. “Refined” means stripped of just about all nutrients thus coined as “empty calories.”

Foods containing refined carbs are easily digested so even if you eat a lot of that spaghetti, an hour later you’ll be hungry.

Bad carbs include white flour, white bread, white rice, pastries, snacks, pasta, and cereals. Processed foods also contain bad carbs and added sugars especially high fructose corn syrup – the artificial kind.

I do not suggest you cut all carbs out at once. In this case less is more. There are lots of “good” carbs out there like fruit. If you cut all carbs out of your diet there’s a good chance you’ll crash and burn then suck down as many carbs as you can to make up for the lack of – I know this from experience.

Slowly cutout the bad carbs, continue eating the good ones but don’t over do ii and you’ll see a difference in your belly size in no time.

#4 – Drink green tea.

Green tea contains the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG has been found to increase metabolism and in studies has been shown to be effective in helping to reduce belly fat.

EGCG is a plant based compound called catechins. Catechins are best known to help fight free radical damage to your cells. EGCG is naturally found in some plants such as the green tea-leaf, but can also be found as a dietary supplement in pill form.

A cup of green tea or some refreshing iced green tea may help cut down on the belly fat due to the catechins it contains. It can also benefit you directly before aerobic exercise by helping you burn more fat during your work out.

  1. My life has become more stressful than ever before in the last couple of years. I have gained 24 kgs without particularly changing my diet. That said for the last few months I have become very conscious of what I am eating and have actively tried to start losing some weight. During this last month I have only lost about 1.5kg and am becoming even more stressed. Any help or suggestions you can offer will be greatly appreciated please. I have always maintained weight loss/maintenance is a state of mind but right now, I just cannot seem to sort myself out and am getting extremely despondent with life.

    1. Fiona, oh girl! I am so relating to you right now! I am going through something similar at work right now. I have gained back some weight and due to the situation I don’t care about a damn thing including what I eat. Here’s how I’m dealing: First I try to remember I”m human and forgive myself. Second, understand being stressed the body releases cortisol and that increases the appetite. Third, our bodies change and it very well could be that you’re not processing foods the same way you used to. I meditate to try and center myself and release the issue/s that I have survived! Try looking up Lisa Beachy’s meditations on Youtube. Even if you don’t “meditate” just listening to some of her videos can be calming. Once you’re feeling more centered then start watching the food, calories and quality, again. Lastly do not be reluctant to reach out to others for help. You may want to speak to your Doctor to make sure nothing is going on medically to prohibit weight loss or weight gain.
