The Skin’s Functions – Acceptable Poisons?

Ahhh skin as soft as a newborn baby’s. Don’t we wish!

Most of the time we really don’t give much thought to the purpose of our skin and its functions. Generally women, rather than men, think of skin in terms of daily skin care routines for the face based on their knowledge of the type of skin they have. One thing is for sure, as we age, the skin loses that soft, suppleness that we were born with – and we do lots of things to try to get it back!

I think we take for granted everything our skin does for us. It is actually the largest organ of the body, and is one seventh of our body weight. Some functions of the skin includes protection, excretion, secretion, regulation, sensation and absorption. I’ll briefly touch on all of these functions, but I’ll expand on absorption and secretion. Stay with me to the end of the post to discover some fascinating, accidental harm we’ve done to ourselves.

Easy Weight Loss Diets – Flip the Switch

Gaining a few pounds now and then is normal, and you may be able to lose those additional few pounds without too much trouble. Let me tell you about my weight struggles and then I’ll tell you about flipping the weight loss switch.

When I was in my mid thirties, I found the pounds just started to stick to me like peanut butter to fingers. I really wasn’t eating any more than I used to, but suddenly I found my pants not fitting and slowly I bought bigger size after biggrt size. I gained 70 pounds!

I still don’t know what happened to cause the weight gain. However, losing it is still a battle of my mind versus my mouth, and one that is very real struggle for me. I understand what is probably part of the problem. See my post titled, High Fructose Corn Syrup – Your Brain’s Supplier for a little insight into a very common ingredient that may be to blame.

Allow me to explain about the easy weight loss diets and staying fit for life. Continue reading “Easy Weight Loss Diets – Flip the Switch”

One Reason You’re Overweight – High Fructose Corn Syrup

The 1970s brought us things like the skateboard, disco dancing and the beginning of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in just about every type of food production. By the 1980s soda drinks such as the highly recognized Coke products were using HFCS.  I refer to HFCS as your brain’s supplier. Stay with me until the end of this post to explain. Ultimate Protein Powder – Whey, and Creatine and Organic Oh My!

The ultimate protein powder you use will be based on your individual needs. I have recently added a protein powder to my food plan, and based on the positive behaviors I’ve seen in myself I’m not sure what the heck took me so long to incorporate this into my diet!  I explain my discovery below.

I have been jogging for about 5 years now. I don’t jog that much in a week, only about 6-9 miles (a week not a day!), but that is enough for me to get my cardio going. By the end of the week I was so tired I didn’t even want to walk up one flight of stairs because my legs didn’t want to cooperate! I was exhausted, literally. Then one day I was having a casual conversation with someone at work about exercise, and he told me a secret about my exhausted muscles.

He said I needed protein to help the muscles recover from the exercise.

Wait, what? How could I have not already thought of something so simple and logical?

And why didn’t my Doctor ever tell me this when I explained how tired I was after a week of jogging only a few miles? Continue reading “Ultimate Protein Powder – Whey, and Creatine and Organic Oh My!”

Food Additives – To Eat or Not to Eat?

Growing up you don’t care or think about what type of food additives you’re eating. All you know is all those things that look pretty and taste yummy are delicious!

Then one day you hear about or read something about additives and how you may want to rethink eating them or at least some of them. Below I have a list of potentially harmful food additives and what countries they’ve been banned in (and not obviously not the United States). The Hidden Survival Muscle and the Natural Behavior that is Killing Us

We all want to be healthy. We don’t plan to do things to cause ourselves pain or suffering.

But life happens.

We find jobs that require us to sit at a desk for hours upon hours. We work long hours to make headway in our careers. We put our children first. We make sure they have what they need, and enable them to participate in the hobbies they want. We don’t take the time to care for ourselves physically, and then one day it happens… Continue reading “The Hidden Survival Muscle and the Natural Behavior that is Killing Us”

About Justina

Hi everyone and welcome to My Healthy Best website. Health has been a priority to me for as long as I can remember. It has become more important to me since my husband was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

Together he and I have researched, purchased products and tried to compile an understanding of the effects of a variety of issues on the human body.  I do have chronic back pain. I did not always have it, and I did not have any trauma, like a car accident, that caused it.

Like many of you, I have had a job where I sit at a desk for 8 hours a day for 13 years now.  Let’s see, that’s approximately 27,000 hours (give or take) of sitting! I have chronic back pain and poor posture from sitting at that desk job.  And I sometimes have lower back pain from walking or standing too much, and just trying to sit for my commute to my desk job. I find myself moving and fidgeting the entire ride.

I also have some beautiful genetics which has cause my cholesterol to be at a point of concern since my twenties.  My Doctor was not concerned about the higher bad cholesterol at that time because my “good” cholesterol was well… good . But now, a couple of decades later and I have been harassed to lose weight or go on cholesterol medicine.  Not doing medicine – which is a personal choice right now.

Yeah about that weight loss. Genetics handed me a raw deal with the cholesterol but socialization and family dysfunction handed me a raw deal with anxiety and how to deal with life’s problems. (Oh don’t be so surprised at my family dysfunction. Your family had dysfunction too – admit it!) So eating to feel better has been a huge battle. Not to mention overcoming food addictions.

I want to give you Knowledge

Knowledge is power. If you don’t know something may have a negative impact on the human body, how can you choose differently?

My goal is to provide you with information  to help you become a more aware person about what may cause injury and illness and how to prevent or relieve it.

My Healthy Best means exactly that. No matter where you are on your journey in life, no matter how much or little money you might have – at this very moment in time you are doing the best you can with what you have. This includes your health and wellness.

If you ever need a hand, have any questions or a suggested topic you’d like me to provide more information about, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

All the best,
