Has everyone seen the chia pets commercial? I think the commercials are especially popular around Christmas. In fact, I think I had one when I was younger. My mom got it for me because we would laugh every time we saw that commercial.
In case you never had the pleasure of seeing those commercials please allow me to introduce you, or remind you of it! And then stay tuned for some surprising benefits of the chia seed!

Chia seeds have become so much more popular then just growing a furry looking pet. There are actual benefits to consuming them and they can absolutely aid with weight loss. Well there is a mixed bunch of stories all over the internet about chia seeds not aiding in the loss of weight of individuals. I started to look into the benefits of chia seeds a few years ago. But, the more I researched the more in disbelief I became.
I was having a hard time finding any information on the subject.
Then suddenly I came across some scientific research and my inner knowing solidified into proof! Please I encourage you to read this research and the results for yourself: Chia induces clinically discrete weight loss and improves lipid profile only in altered previous values.
The research basically says in conclusion: consumption of chia for 12 weeks promotes significant but discrete reduction in weight and waist circumference, and enhances lipid profile dependent of initial values.

Chia seeds burn fat because they contain linoleic acid and polyunsaturated omega 6 fatty acid. Another study showed that linoleic acid significantly reduced body fat over a six-month period and AND prevented weight gain among overweight adults!

Chia seeds aid in weight loss but they also help with other health benefits. They contain omega 3-fatty acids.
Omega 3-fatty acids are an essential nutrient because the body can not make it, therefore, it is essential you ingest it from your food! So which would you rather eat, chia seeds or oily fish for your omega 3-fatty acid? Fish is gross, but add the word oily in front of it and ewwwwwww yuck! Give me chia seeds please!
Omega 3-fatty acids are known to improve heart health, plays a role in weight loss and management, helps to decrease liver fat, fights inflammation, dementia and asthma. And if that wasn’t enough, omega 3-fatty acid helps to promote bone health.
Holy cow, the benefits. Why wouldn’t you eat chia seeds for health benefits?
Are Chia Seeds Better than Flax
I already discussed chia seeds containing fiber and omega 3 fatty acid. Flax seeds contain both of those too. So far they’re head-to-head. Flax do contain lignan and chia seeds don’t. Lignans are polyphenols found in plants, and they are considered an antioxidant. This is the only benefit flax has over chia seeds.
But here’s where the little chia seeds are going to kick butt. First if you consume flax seeds, make sure they are ground because if they are not then many times the seeds will pass right through your body without absorbing the nutrients. Chia seeds do not have that problem. You do not have to ground chia seeds to reap the benefits.
Second, chia has more fiber and omega 3 fatty acid per serving than flax. Yep, more bang for your buck in those little seeds.
Third, chia seeds contain antioxidants and minerals that flax do not contain.
Chia wins! But you could always used ground flax and chia seeds for the combined benefits. So on to the good stuff now – the drink recipe!
Chia Seed Drink Recipe
Okay now for the very tasty stuff. Here’s the recipe for Chia Seeds Lemon Honey Drink for Weight Loss:
1/2 tsp chia seeds
1 – 1 1/2 cups water
1 tsp honey (or more to taste wink, wink) I use about 2 tsps of honey in mine, and
1 tsp lemon juice
Put the water in a glass and add the chia seeds. Let them soak for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes add the honey and lemon and more water. That’s it!
